The history of Gradac and the area of Makarska Riviera dates from an ancient times of the Old Bronze and Iron Age. Although Gradac area was inhabited in ancient times, as an urban settlement is first mentioned in 1649, whose name derives from the fort which was built during the Kandyan war in the 17th century. Here you can find many historical Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque churches and lefts and ruins that are still valuable evidence of the tumultuous history of Dalmatia.
In Roman times, the Gradac area was most probably the seat of the Roman civitas Biston, which as a coastal center belonged to the colony of Narona. At the locality of Gradina was found a cornice fragment of the monumental building from the 2nd - 3rd century, also the Roman coin pieces. Near the Laguna hotel were found many tombs.

During the Turkish invasions in the area were built many defensive structures such as the stone tower from 17th century. Gradac is certainly marked by the turbulent past and the various conquests and rules, but it has always managed to preserve its original spirit which is still felt at every step and on every historic building.
